BCN Development betting on condos in Union Square, Downtown Brooklyn

BCN Development is moving forward with two condo conversion projects, with the mindset that local scarcity will lead to success in two different neighborhoods. The developer is in contract to purchase a rental building at 9 East 16th Street for around $17 million, which will begin conversion later this summer. “It’s a beautiful, ornate building,” said Craig Nassi, CEO of BCN. Joanne Podell picks the next big thing

Two years ago, Joanne Podell saw potential in a seven-block stretch of Fifth Avenue that had largely been ignored by fashion retailers. Between 42nd and 49th Streets, “the problem was the tenants,” said Podell, an executive vice president at Cushman and Wakefield with a pioneering spirit: 15 years ago, she helped Duane Reade secure its first lease in a residential building — a rental complex on 2nd Avenue and 63rd Street — and worked with Anne Taylor to roll out Loft, the clothing chain’s hipper, younger offshoot. Tommy Hilfiger Corporation expands at Starrett-Lehigh in sub-sublease

The fashion label Tommy Hilfiger Corporation has signed a deal to expand by 45,000 s/f at 601 West 26th Street, according to sources. The apparel company already has over 200,000 s/f at the location, the majority of floors four and six. The Starrett Lehigh Building, at 601 West 26th Street, has cavernous floor plates over 130,000 s/f in the building’s base, offering large tenants the chance to sprawl their operations on just a few floors, a desirable type of layout. Real estate industry puts priority on building safety

On Sunday, May 1st, just hours before President Obama announced that Osama Bin Laden had been killed in Pakistan, security personnel held a training exercise at the Port Authority Bus Terminal. Portions of the north and south wing were closed, and traffic outside the commuter hub was diverted, as officers responded to a bombing scenario staged with simulated smoke. At the time, it was little more than a routine drill: since 9/11, the Port Authority has invested over $5 billion in securing its bridges, tunnels, ports, and terminals, and has avoided, at least to public knowledge, any major security breaches over the last nine and a half years.
