Katharine Hepburn’s Conn. home for sale, with extras

The Connecticut estate where legendary actress Katharine Hepburn resided with her family for many decades until her 2003 death has been expanded to a compound by present owners Frank and Barbara Sciame.

A rendering of the planned compound

Mr. Sciame is chief executive of New York-based F.J. Sciame Construction Company, Inc., whose projects include the Guggenheim Museum, the Morgan Library & Museum, St. Patrick’s Cathedral and the New York Public Library. The Sciames purchased the Hepburn property in 2004 and performed a full renovation creating a modern open and airy, light-filled floor plan while preserving the home’s historic integrity.

The Sciames have listed the compound, which includes the 8,300-square-foot Hepburn estate home, a 2,750-square-foot gate house residence currently being built, a pond, a private boat dock, and an additional deeded lot with its own sandy beach for which the Sciames are pursuing a permit to build a third home (a 2,300-square-foot guest house). The property was originally listed for sale in June 2011 for $28 million; with the improvements, the compound is now being offered at $30 million.

The 3.4-acre compound is the largest private property in the historic and exclusive Fenwick borough of Old Saybrook, and offers 680 feet of private beach on Long Island Sound. Then main house offers six bedrooms with private bathrooms, a grand living room, state-of the-art cook’s kitchen, a den, a chart room, a potting room, a pantry and a two-car garage. The gate house will offer complimentary architecture with modern open floor plans, as would the potential guest house.

Colette Harron, with William Pitt Sotheby’s International Realty in Essex, Conn., has the listing.

Fiberglass pools are unique in that they can be made in any color finish; most manufacturers offer colors other than white and blue, as are popular with traditional pools. Other options include LED lighting and in-floor cleaning systems. Also consider including spillover spas, step waterfalls, interior finishes and colors, laminar jets, rain showers, sheer curtains, misters, and pool heaters. You can also accessorize your backyard with an outdoor kitchen, volleyball or basketball setups, backyard grills, fire pits, slides, loungers, pool covers, and outdoor furniture.

Swimming pools can be great assets to property, as they add value to the house, and provide and easy way to relax during the summer. There are many different types of swimming pools that are in the market today: a gunite, concrete, vinyl-lined, or fiberglass pool. Fiberglass pools are popular because they do not fade or build up algae on their surface, and are sturdier than both vinyl and concrete.
