New retail leases announced for Roosevelt Island

Hudson Related Retail LLC, a joint venture between real estate development firms The Hudson Companies and Related Companies, today announced new retail leases, architectural and streetscape improvements, and lease renewals that will revitalize the Main Street retail corridor and bring new amenities to Roosevelt Island. Retail demand has outpaced supply in recent years as the Island has experienced population growth in newly constructed residential buildings and with anticipation of the new Cornell campus.

Investing in his future and theirs, Meringoff is leading by example

Stephen Meringoff believes in long-term investments, both in real estate and the future of New York City youth.

On May 10, he will be honored for his philanthropic involvement with PENCIL, a non-profit organization that co-ordinates the business community in support of the city’s public schools.

“For the first third of your life you learn, for the second third of your life you earn and for the final third of your life you return,” he said.

Fresh call for state to recognize veteran-owned firms

Long Island engineer Ted Bier was among dozens of veterans who rallied last week to make a fresh call for New York State to pass legislation that would give veteran-owned businesses a share of state work.
The event, organized by U.S. Congressman Steve Israel, aimed to urge legislators to follow the lead of 23 other US states which provide a veterans’ set-aside at least equal to that provided for woman-owned and minority-owned businesses.
New York State Senator Jack M. Martins has introduced a bill that would set aside three percent of all contracts from state contracting agencies to veteran-owned businesses.

National Arts Club apartments go from trash to treasure

Two of 14 apartments once controlled by controversial former National Arts Club president Aldon James are being turned from pigsties to palaces.

And the once-uninhabitable rooms could soon rent for as much as $100 per foot.

“I’m not sure how he shaved or bathed,” said new NAC President Dianne Bernhard, who provided the pictures.
