Retailers reveal how e-business is breathing new life back into slumbering store operations

LAS VEGAS: Brick and mortar stores don’t need to worry about online retailers, they just need to join their ranks.

In 2012, online retail accounted for six percent of all retail sales, compared to traditional retail stores which accounted for the other 94 percent, said Marianne Wilson, editor in chief of Chain Store Age, at the “Retail: The Next Wave” panel here Sunday, citing numbers by Forrester Research.

“The other side of the coin is that it’s growing at a faster rate,” said Wilson of online retail, adding that Forrester is projecting an increase to nine percent by 2016.

Maison Kayser is rising in New York.
The French gourmet bakery chain already has a 4,000 s/f retail store on 74th Street and 3rd Avenue, but the brand will be opening three more locations in the Midtown West and Flatiron neighborhoods, said Paul Berkman, co-head of NY retail at Jones Lang LaSalle, who represents Kayser.
“They’re going big,” Berkman told Real Estate Weekly at the ICSC REcon 2013 Conference in Las Vegas Monday afternoon. “They want to bring quality bread to America.”

Colliers debuts new space at RECon

LAS VEGAS: Collier’s International took this year’s RECon as an opportunity to launch their marketing of the retail space at 501 Madison Avenue, which the company is repositioning as it comes off an 81-year ground lease this month.

The two stories of retail, currently divided between a number of tenants, will be renovated into a single 12,000 s/f space that should be ready for occupancy in the second quarter of 2014, according to Robert L. Freedman, of Colliers.

Each exhibitor at the ICSC’s RECon in Las Vegas has a unique booth that serves as both a meeting place and an billboard for the company’s brand. retailers generally use the same look and feel as in the stores — the McDonalds booth leads one to expect a hamburger — and brokerages tend to favor efficient meeting spaces.

‘New Downtown’ gets hard sell in Vegas

Real Estate Weekly caught up with Brookfield Properties’ Edward Hogan, national director of retail leasing, at ICSC’s RECon on Monday afternoon. Hogan’s focus for the conference this year is the leasing of the retail space in Brookfield Place, the complex formerly know as the World Financial Center in Lower Manhattan.
“We want every tenant to be reflective of the new Downtown,” he said.

Search for store star underway

A cart-load of ingenious retail deals are being considered for New York’s Retail Deal of the Year.

Deliberations are underway for The Real Estate Board of New York’s (REBNY) annual contest to recognize the city’s top retail brokers.

The two awards, The Most Creative Deal in Manhattan and The Retail Deal Which Most Significantly Benefits the Manhattan Retail Market, honor the most inventive and noteworthy New York City retail deals of the past year.

The winners will be announced at the Retail Committee’s annual cocktail party on June 11, 2013 at the 101 Club.

Hong Kong world’s hottest retail market

Hong Kong is the world’s hottest retail market, attracting significantly more new entrants than any other city, according to the 2013 edition of How Global is the Business of Retail? by global property advisor CBRE.
The city saw 51 new retailer entries from all sectors – not just high-end fashion brands. The new entrants were principally from Europe, but also from the U.S., Japan and Korea.
U.S. retailers are by far the most aggressive when expanding store networks globally. They are increasingly targeting the Middle East, Central & Eastern Europe and Latin America .
